Tim Read deserves the universal respect and recognition that has accompanied his passing – far too soon – on the weekend.

I’ve known Tim since we were both candidates for the Victorian State Election in 2018.

On election night, our little Preston campaign team went to Tim’s election party at a bowls club in Brunswick, where Tim would have to wait a couple of weeks before finding out he’d become the MP for Brunswick.

When newly elected, I remember Tim speaking about how surprised he was that as a new MP he would only be able to ask the occasional question, to a mostly empty chamber.

He wanted better for state parliament. He expected better. He worked towards better.

It’s clear that in the eight years since, he found his way.

His valedictory speech was to a packed house, with colleagues from all sides listening and responding warmly.

He used his public platform in his final year to advocate to save VicHealth.

I respect Tim because he turned up, he did the hard work, and was humble.

This didn’t mean he wasn’t political. Tim was there when I needed solid political advice when I was Mayor, and I am grateful for it.

He was respected by all sides because he was respectful of others.

His legacy will live on with VicHealth and perhaps, one day, if, finally, Sydney Road gets some bike lanes.
